#11: June 4th, 2010 - Refurbishing the Brake Power Booster Assembly...
The power brake booster of the Mustang Cobra is a special part. It is a different diameter than the GT one to increase braking performance when used with the "Cobra" calipers and rotors that are on the car.
It can be identified by the "Cobra" tag on the top of the unit. Unfortunately, the exterior of the power brake booster was in sad shape. The "Cobra" lettering had worn off the tag and the master cylinder had been leaking for quite some time, causing extensive rust on the bottom of the booster.
The first step in refurbishing the exterior was to take a heavy wire brush to the booster to remove the large rust scales and dirt. Next a die grinder with 80 grit paper was used to remove the rust and loose paint on the booster. Next the entire surface was sanded with a Scotch-Brite pad to get it ready for primer.
The decals were taped off and two coats of primer were applied and sanding of the primer occurred after each coat.
Three coats of black paint make the booster look as good as new. Too bad about the decal.
To fix that, I purchased a second Cobra booster on eBay that had a good decal, so this one will now go on to someone else.
